I'm A Weird Ear And So Are You
Howdy Earheads, Weird Ears Nation. What’s Up? Thanks for coming to my corner of the internet.
For a long time, I’ve wanted to create a place online away from social media (is this a social media? This feels like Xanga) where I can provide a more comprehensive look into my creative process and share things that inspire me. I'll post live recordings, random covers, soundboards of shows, and I'll keep you in the loop on tour dates.
Maybe Substacks are old hat now, but I didn’t love the idea of Patreon. Mostly because I want things to be accessible to Earheads (Weird Listeners?). I think it’s important to share where I’m at in my musical evolution, because, albums take a bunch of time to release and only show part of the creative evolution. Maybe the most distilled form of the process. Meticulously edited and polished. It's free but chances are I'll post some exclusives under a paywall in the future.
This is an outlet for me to share where I'm at creatively By the time an album is mixed, let alone released, I’m totally on to the next thing. It’s certainly not an uncommon feeling for artists but personally, I’m bouncing around constantly with what I listen to and practice. Whether I realize it or not, these tidbits influence how and what I write. I think it’s incredibly important that I explore and indulge every curious inkling and pull on every sonic thread. I know that’s a nebulous statement, but I just don’t think it’s the Weird Ears Way to stay in one place for too long. And, I think, I owe you a glimmer into the journey. If you’re interested, of course.
For the next one, I’ll probably write a ramble or two about my new album called, Head In The Sand. It will be released into the world 2/7/2025 and you can preorder it here:
Today, I'm sharing a live tune I recorded from a Weird Ears Instrumental Trio gig at Locust. Locust is a slammin' restaurant here in Nashville that lets me, Weird Ears bassist Alec O'Connell and drummer Ben Parks set up and play on their patio sometimes. I’ve been experimenting with instrumental and jazz-adjacent Weird Ears gigs for a while now thanks to places like Third Man’s Blue Room, Wilburn Street Tavern, and Locust. These gigs have been monumentally transformative for me and I think we have hit new strides, this year. The trio gigs especially have helped me become friends with sonic space and emptiness. Being a singular melodic voice can be a naked feeling, but with time you get used to it. It’s bled over into my writing, that’s for sure. Okay, I am rambling. Enjoy this rendition of the amazing, Gabor Szabo’s cover of “Summer Breeze” recorded from the patio of Locust.
I have a lot of ideas on things I can share with you. I am thinking of 2 posts a month with good stuff like :
live bootlegs, like this one, mixes, things I’m practicing, all kinds of weird demos and improvisations.
Some of these are things I’m probably going to ask money for. I think I’m going to let y’all stream these tunes for free but I’ll probably put the download link behind the paywall. A paid subscription would really help me have more funds to put towards merch, buying vinyl, and all kinds of other things that i can use to give y’all a quality Weird Ears Experience. After all, I’m a Weird Ear and so are you.
